The Gemora states that Rabbi Yochanan fell ill and Rabbi Chanina came to visit him. Rabbi Chanina asked him, "Is the suffering endearing to you?" Rabbi Yochanan replied, "Not them or their rewards." Rabbi Chanina said to him, "Give me your hand." He did and Rabbi Yochanan was healed.

The Gemora asks: Why didn't Rabbi Yochanan heal himself (as we can see from the previous Gemora where Rabbi Yochanan healed Rabbi Chiya bar Abba)? The Gemora answers: A prisoner does not have the ability to release himself from jail.

We discussed the concept of tefillah for a choleh. Which is more preferable; the choleh davening for himself or others davening for him?

*** By Yishmael, Rashi says that Hashem listens to the tefillah of the choleh.

*** By Yaakov and Rochel, it seems according to Rashi with the explanation from the Imrei Chein that the one who is suffering should be the one who is davening.

*** Our Gemora seems to say the opposite.

*** Mizrachi explains that Rabbi Yochanan couldn't concentrate so well due to his suffering.

*** The Tur explains that our Gemora is not referring to tefillah.
